"The work of Matta, Wilfredo Lamb, Picasso, Klee and Native American design and craft from the Northwest Coast all share a compelling, rare, easily recognized style. The same is true for EL Greco, Bernini, and Balthus, each compared to their contemporaries – other famous artists working at similar aims. What the paintings of RenO (Robert Franczek) shares with these artists is an unusually personalized style. Like Stuart Davis, RenO’s work blurs the difference between the figurative and the abstract. RenO’s paintings are also flat, yet they include vibrant energized color fields. Some of his forms suggest organs, and corals, similar to Tim Rollins and K.O.S. others are clearly heads and other body parts, flowers, cityscapes, landscapes. Often his work seems dream-like or surreal at the same time; it constantly references nature in hip new ways. RenO’s organic forms may appear with a mouth piece and keys like musical instruments – a giant diagonal floating eye surrounded by flowers pedals with a flower for a pupil are the kinds of images he uses. Some of his paintings have a sci-fi quality. The mood of his paintings is lush and inviting, warm. The compositions are bold and daring. RenO’s art history influences and formal motives do not relate his ability to synthesize experience, surprise himself and others."
